Dermal Needling
Dermal Needling is a cosmetic procedure to stimulate collagen and elastin production for improved skin texture and appearance.
What is Dermal Needling?
Dermal needling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns by producing collagen. Loss of collagen is the number one cause of skin aging. This treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, fines lines and wrinkles, reduced skin elasticity, uneven skin tone & it’s also used for anti-aging around the eyes and on sunspots.

From the age of about 20, we produce 1% less collagen a year each year, and this becomes visible at around age 30. Dermal needling works by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen, elastin and communicating factors, helping it to behave like younger skin. It does this by stimulating keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblast cells, and they release the growth factors that stimulate production of collagen and elastin. This will enable skin to be more even in tone and texture. Skin loses collagen with aging and injury, new collagen makes skin firmer and more supple and resilient.
How Long Does Dermal Needling Last?
Whilst you’re likely to see results after a couple of weeks, treating at 4 week intervals allows for maximum collagen deposition. However, skin improvement is likely to be at its peak at 6 months post it’s final treatment.
Dermal Needling - A Minimally Invasive Procedure
Prior to the procedure, a topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin to ensure the treatment is pain free. This takes approximately 20 minutes to work. Then a pen-like tool is used to create thousands of small pricks under the skin to rejuvenate the appearance. The pinpricks are so small that they are generally invisible in appearance.
What Is The Recovery Time for Dermal Needling?
Skin will appear red and sunburnt afterwards, but this fades quickly. Most people require little if any downtime. As the top layer of skin dies off you may have some dryness and sloughing of dead skin cells in the following days. Skin will be more sensitive to sun damage and sunscreen is important after treatment. Recovery is usually quite quick, with more radiant skin visible within a couple of weeks. Significant, long term improvement will require 3 treatments for anti aging, more for scar and stretch mark revision.
