5 Things We Wish Everyone Knew Before Having an Aesthetic Treatment
5. You should never feel pressured into having something done
A consultation is not a commitment to treatment.
Read that again.
You are allowed to ask questions. You are allowed to think about it. You're allowed to decide something isn't for you. And you're allowed to walk out having had absolutely nothing done.
You should understand what treatment is being suggested, why it's being suggested, what you can realistically expect, what the potential risks and side effects are, what the aftercare involves and what it will cost.
If you're unsure, ask.
If something doesn't feel right, don't do it.
And if you're being encouraged to make a quick decision because of a special offer, a disappearing appointment or some other form of pressure?
That's probably a good moment to put your coat back on.
There’s a lot to think about before having an aesthetic treatment.
Unfortunately, Instagram would have you believe the process goes something like this:
See a face you like.
Find out what she had done.
Book same treatment.
Emerge looking spectacular.
If only faces were that straightforward.
Whether you’re considering Botox, filler, skin boosters, polynucleotides or something completely different, there are a few things we wish everyone knew before they booked.
Not because we want to put you off.
Quite the opposite.
We want you to have treatments for the right reasons, with realistic expectations and without feeling as though your perfectly normal face has somehow become an emergency.
So, before anyone comes near you with a needle, here are five things worth knowing.
1. Start with what’s bothering you, not the treatment you think you need
This is probably the biggest one.
You do not need to arrive at your consultation knowing exactly what treatment you want.
In fact, we'd much rather you told us what you're noticing.
Perhaps you look tired even when you've slept. Maybe your skin has started to feel different. Perhaps a particular line bothers you in photographs or you've noticed your face has changed after menopause or weight loss.
That's the useful bit.
Because “I need cheek filler” is already a proposed solution. “My face looks flatter here than it used to” tells us what you actually want help with.
Those two conversations can lead to very different places.
And sometimes the treatment you thought you needed isn't the one we'd recommend at all.
2. Your face will not behave exactly like somebody else's
We know. Deeply inconvenient.
You can bring photographs. You can show us the woman whose skin you love. You can absolutely explain the kind of result you're hoping for.
But we can't copy and paste her face onto yours.
Your facial structure, skin, age, muscle movement, genetics, lifestyle and treatment history are all your own. Even two people having the same treatment won't necessarily get identical results.
Before-and-after photographs can be useful for showing what a treatment might achieve, but they aren't a catalogue.
And neither is Instagram.
The aim should be finding the right approach for your face, not recreating somebody else's.
3. More isn't always better
This applies to treatments, products and, frankly, most things involving your face.
There can be a temptation with aesthetics to think that if a little bit makes a difference, a lot must make an enormous difference.
Not necessarily.
Sometimes the best treatment plan involves doing something small and then stopping.
Sometimes it means treating one area rather than five. Sometimes it means waiting to see how your face responds before deciding whether to do anything else.
And sometimes the most useful sentence we can say is:
“I don't think you need that.”
Faces aren't projects that need to be permanently worked on.
We'd much rather leave something alone than treat it simply because we can.
4. Good aesthetic treatment still involves some reality
We love what aesthetics can do.
But we're also not going to tell you that one syringe, one appointment or one magical new treatment is going to solve everything you've ever disliked about your appearance.
Some treatments can soften lines. Some can improve skin quality. Some can restore or add volume. Some can improve hydration, texture or particular concerns.
None of them can stop ageing.
And that's not really the goal anyway.
Realistic expectations are a huge part of being happy with your results. Often the loveliest outcome isn't somebody asking, “What have you had done?”
It's:
“You look really well.”
We'll take that.
One last thing…
You do not have to hate your face before you're allowed to change something about it.
And you don't have to change something simply because you've noticed it.
Both things can be true.
You can like your face and still fancy softening a line. You can embrace getting older and still want your skin to look fresher. You can have Botox and still be perfectly happy about being 50.
Aesthetic treatments don't have to be about chasing youth or fixing something that's “wrong”.
Sometimes you just want to look a little more like yourself on a good day.
And that is quite enough.
Thinking about a treatment but not sure where to start?
Perfect. You don't need to arrive with a treatment plan.
Book a free, no-obligation consultation and tell us what you're noticing, what you'd like to change and what you'd very much like us to leave alone.
We'll talk you through the options and, if we don't think you need something, we'll tell you that too.
