Why Does My Face Look So Tired? What Really Happens to Your Skin in Midlife
There comes a point in midlife when you catch yourself in the bathroom mirror and think:
“Blimey! When did this happen? Am I really as shattered as I look or is it just my face?”
You slept. Sort of. You drank some water. You might have even remembered to take your makeup off. (Please take off your makeup and please DO NOT do it with face wipes!)
And yet your face is giving “I’ve been awake since 4am worrying about something I can’t quite remember.”
Welcome to your forties, fifties and beyond.
It’s not just you. And no, you haven’t suddenly forgotten how to look after your skin. Your face is changing and, unfortunately, gravity has decided it’s about time to start moving things south.
Rude!
So what’s actually going on?
As we get older, our skin produces less collagen and elastin. It becomes thinner, drier and less springy, and we gradually lose some of the volume and structure that used to give our face its youthful shape.
Then there are hormones.
Bloody hormones!
Perimenopause and menopause can have a noticeable effect on our skin too. Changes in oestrogen can contribute to dryness, changes in elasticity and a loss of that lovely plump, hydrated look we probably took completely for granted at 32.
You know, when we experienced the first signs of ageing and, rather than appreciating how ridiculously youthful we still looked, panicked and started reaching for the anti-ageing creams.
And suddenly the face you’ve known for years starts behaving like it has a personal grudge against you. Multiple lines seem to appear overnight. Your cheeks look a little flatter. Your jawline isn't quite where you remember leaving it. Your skin looks dull even though you’re doing all the “right” things.
And the under-eye area?
Let’s not even go there.
But here’s the important bit…
You don't necessarily need to look younger.
You probably just want to look like you on a really good day.
And that’s a completely different thing.
For most women we see at Town House, the goal isn't to walk out looking frozen, overfilled or like someone has altered their face with a filter. It’s much simpler than that.
They want to look fresher. Less tired. A little more rested. Maybe soften something that's bothering them when they look in the mirror.
But most importantly, they still want to look like themselves.
This is where “tweakments” come in.
We’re big believers in doing less, but doing it well.
Depending on what’s bothering you, that might mean improving hydration and skin quality, supporting collagen, replacing some lost volume, softening the appearance of lines or simply getting your skin looking healthier.
And sometimes the answer isn't an injectable at all. It might be a better skincare routine or a treatment that improves the quality of your skin.
Or, occasionally, it might be us telling you:
“Honestly? You don’t need anything done.”
Yes. We really do say that.
Because good aesthetics isn't about finding something to fix every time you look in the mirror. It’s about understanding what has changed and deciding what, if anything, you actually want to do about it.
The midlife face isn't a problem to solve.
It’s a face that has lived a bit.
There have been children, jobs, stress, sunshine, laughter, probably a questionable amount of wine and at least one decade where SPF was apparently considered optional.
We’re not interested in erasing all of that.
We’re interested in helping you look as fresh, rested and well as you feel. Or, on some mornings, as fresh as you’d like to pretend you feel.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Fancy a little refresh?
If you're looking at your face and thinking, “Something has changed, but I don't know what”, that's exactly what a consultation is for.
You don't need to know which treatment you need, arrive with a shopping list or even have decided that you want to “have work done”.
We’ll talk about what’s bothering you, look at your skin and facial structure and work out what would or wouldn't make sense for you.
The goal is to have you feeling more confident in your own skin, not looking like someone else.
